What Happens If You Use TEREA in an Old IQOS Device?

What Happens If You Use TEREA in an Old IQOS Device?

One of the most common questions from IQOS users upgrading to ILUMA — or those still using older devices — is: can you use TEREA sticks in an old IQOS device? The short answer is no, and here’s exactly why.

Why TEREA Only Works in IQOS ILUMA

TEREA sticks are specifically engineered for the IQOS ILUMA’s SmartCore Induction System™. Unlike older IQOS devices that use a heating blade that inserts into the stick, the ILUMA heats TEREA sticks from the inside using induction — the heating element is built inside the TEREA stick itself.

This means:

• TEREA sticks have no opening at the bottom for a blade to enter
• There is no external heating element in TEREA — it’s all internal
• Without the ILUMA’s induction field, the TEREA stick simply cannot be heated

What Happens If You Try to Use TEREA in an Old IQOS?

If you attempt to insert a TEREA stick into an older IQOS device (IQOS 3, 3 Duo, 3 Multi, or 2.4 Plus):

• The stick won’t fit properly — TEREA sticks are designed without the opening for a blade, so they won’t seat correctly in older holders
• No heating will occur — even if partially inserted, the blade cannot heat the TEREA stick as it’s designed to be heated internally
• Potential device damage — forcing a TEREA stick into an older device could damage the heating blade

Do not attempt to use TEREA sticks in older IQOS devices.

What Sticks Work in Older IQOS Devices?

Older IQOS devices (IQOS 3, 3 Duo, 3 Multi, 2.4 Plus) use HEETS sticks (also known as HeatSticks in some markets). HEETS are designed with an opening for the heating blade and are not compatible with IQOS ILUMA.

Device	Compatible Sticks
IQOS ILUMA (all models)	TEREA, LEVIA
IQOS 3 / 3 Duo / 3 Multi	HEETS only
IQOS 2.4 Plus	HEETS only

Should You Upgrade to IQOS ILUMA?

If you’re currently using an older IQOS device with HEETS and want to switch to TEREA, you’ll need to upgrade to an IQOS ILUMA device. The benefits of upgrading include:

• ❌ No more blade cleaning — ILUMA is maintenance-free
• ✅ Access to the full TEREA range (10+ flavours)
• ✅ Access to LEVIA tobacco-free sticks
• ✅ More consistent flavour delivery via SmartCore Induction™
• ✅ No risk of blade breakage
